Ox eyes – musical encounters

13 september, 18:00 – 21:00
Upperud 9:9, Upperud
In the mill in Upperud, we invite you to a full evening of "ox eyes" - a concept known from previous years of the festival Kontinent Dalsland - where we let musicians and composers go outside their rehearsed programs and meet in new musical constellations.
During the evening, members of Ensemble Hezarfen will meet with local talents and perform in three different duos. The name '"Ox-eye" comes from the circular window that can sometimes be found on roofs and seems to look out over the landscape. We have focused on the insight, the outlook - and possibly the shared vision - of these musical encounters.
The music lasts all evening between 18:00 and 21:00 with a break between each act. The kitchen at Upperud 9:9 is open to both audience and musicians, with the opportunity to enjoy food and drink. Dinner reservations should be made in advance via email to info@upperud.se. Read more about the kitchen at Upperud 9:9 här.
On stage the domra player Olga Kovalenko, clarinettist Boa Pettersson, the performance duo No Deadline and musicians from Ensemble Hezarfen will meet.

OLGA KOVALENKO

Olga Oleksandrivna Kovalenko was born in Ananyiv, a small town in the Odessa region in Ukraine. As a child she played the violin, but after attending an influential folk orchestra performance in her teens she started practicing the domra. Domra is an ancient long-necked string instrument with rich expressive possibilities. Though it's hard to pinpoint its origin, there are early mentions of the domra already in the 11th century during the time of Kievan Rus. In 2013 Olga Kovalenko graduated from music college in Odessa as a solo performer, orchestrator and domra class teacher, and worked as a music teacher and orchestra performer up until the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, when she moved to Sweden. Today she lives in Åmål.

BOA PETTERSON

Boa Pettersson (clarinettist) is an orchestra and chamber musician with a preference for the “deep” clarinets. He has previously studied at the Royal College of Music and Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm. From 1976 until 2016 he was a clarinettist in the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. Boa Pettersson collaborates with and premieres works by many Swedish composers and has done several projects together with bass clarinetist Christer Bothén. He is a member of ensemble Ma.

NO DEADLINE

No Deadline is a Gothenburg-based choreographic duo consisting of Toby Kassell and Ingeborg Zackariassen. Their artistic work stems from the improvisational method of spatial composition and takes on different expressions in response to each process and each context. In collaboration with other artists, No Deadline critically examines relationships and hierarchies between art forms, with the aim of creating opportunities for the work to wander in new directions, as reshaped, transformed entities.
