Jennifer Torrence & Bohuslän Big Bang

8 september 14:00 – 16:30
BRUK, Dals Långed
Nybygget & Nya Magasinet
In this rare concert program, Kontinent Dalsland invites the successful combo Bohuslän Big Bang (BBB) from Bottnafjorden in northern Bohuslän and the American percussionist Jennifer Torrence. In September 2023, the two met in a creative music-making program presented at the performance festival Here:2023 in Vitlycke.
In the first part of the program, we invite the audience at Nybygget to make music in the work “Ricefall” (2004) by Michael Pisaro-Liu, using 20 kilos of rice grains and materials such as plastic, metal and autumn leaves. The piece is performed together with musicians from BBB and under the direction of Jennifer Torrence.
In the second part of the program, we get to listen to Bohuslän Big Bang's (BBB) home-built gamelan orchestra. In the spring of 2023, in a major Nordic collaboration initiated by John Chantler (editionfestival), Levande Musik was able to invite the Balinese ensemble Gamelan Salukat under the direction of Dewa Alit. During their stay, they spent a few days in Gerlesborg on the Bottnafjord and BBB had the opportunity to explore the traditional Indonesian percussion instruments. They recorded the piece Big Bang #1, which was later released by Bottna Utropstecken. Later, the ensemble built their own instruments inspired by the Indonesian model using recycled materials and processed scrap, as well as lots of contact and pick-up microphones.
After the concert, we invite the audience to stay and enjoy a vegetarian paella, cooked on the rice from the piece "Ricefall".

This event is free of charge.

BOHUSLÄN BIG BANG

The music collective Bohuslän Big Bang (BBB) is a rare mix of professional musicians, composers and “sound-curious” amateurs with ties to the area around Bottnafjorden in northern Bohuslän. The collective was formed during the 2021 pandemic, a time marked by canceled concerts and limited travel. They then created an educational platform where everyone who wanted could meet and create music from scratch by exploring sounds and timbral possibilities collectively, building instruments together and working from the participants' own experience. The project provides a local perspective on global issues such as accessibility, democracy, rural/urban, environment, recycling and sustainability.
